Learn how your Breathing patterns can cause Back Pain

Incorrect Breathing patterns can contribute to BACK PAIN

Do you suffer from BACK PAIN

In treating your back pain has your allied health professional ever assessed your breathing patterns?

The way you breathe is essential to prevent BACK PAIN and developing a strong core.

“Yes it is ok to look fat when I breathe”

The most natural way to breathe is via out diaphram, but due to lifestyle factors such as tight clothing, our obsession with looking thinner then we are has lead to a change in our breathing patterns.

So how should we breathe? When you breath in your diaphragm pulls down this pushing the contents of your stomach out. This increase the size of your chest so that your lungs can draw air in.

Correct order:             Stomach Rises
                                    Chest Rises

In a lot of people only their chest raises as they have been conditioned to hold their stomach in.

So how can this incorrect breathing pattern cause back pain?

When you do not breath correctly your deep abdominal muscle your Transverse Abdominus becomes weak and is not able to active correctly. When this occurs it is not able to support the person’s spine, leading to a weakness in the lower back and an increased risk of back injury.

One of the first setps to strengthening your core and preventing back pain is to learn to breath correctly.

Stop living with Back Pain

As a rehab specialist I see people in everyday life who feel that living with back pain is normal. It is something you have to just put up with and there is absolutely nothing they can do about it! If this is you let me break this thought process it is a lie you are telling yourself. If you can go pain free for 1 min you can go pain free for one day, one year, 100yrs. I know this sounds to simple but it is true.

  1. If you have back pain there is a good chance you have what is termed a negative feedback loop enhancing your pain. This is when the body tells the brain not move, you move because you have to (life), it hurts so the brain makes it harder to move increasing sensitive to movement and pain`. You need to break this cycle.

Anti inflammatory tablets may help in the short term, but until you strength you core and loosen off these muscles the cycle will continue. If you wish to break this cycle email me at info@lifestyleessentials.com.au and I will send you a free article in the five steps to prevent back pain.

Do not accept a life with pain, 5 simple steps can set you free from BACK PAIN NOW!!!!!!

Understanding Why Hamstring injuries are so Common

A lot of people have hamstring problems, why? The hamstrings form park of the structure called the superficial posterior sling. This muscles group runs from the top of your head down you back to the soles of your feet. When one muscle in this chain of muscles stops working all the other muscles have to work to compensate for the one muscle that is not working properly.

If you have tight back muscles or tight calves then the hamstrings need to work harder. In a lot of cases people will tend to have weak butt muscles, leading to a weakness in this chain of muscles. The back muscles and the hamstrings work harder to cover for the weaker butt muscles. Overtime this will lead to either lower back pain or hamstring injures. If you play a lot of sport and you do not stretch it is likely you will have hamstring problems. If you do not play a lot of sport and are sedentary it is more likely you will have lower back pain issues.

To over come such problems make sure you
    1. Get you butt working correctly and in the correct firing sequence
    2. Stretch all muscles in the legs 2-3 time per week holding stretches for 1-3 mins
    3. Develop what is call a neutral spine, with good healthy curves.

Weight Belts a great training tool or just a fashion accessory!

Do you wear a weight belt in the GYM, if so why?

It is true that when you where a weight belt you will feel stronger, but do they actually make you stronger?

I often hear people who saying that they started wearing the belt to support their lower back to prevent back pain

Weight belt will not prevent back pain, they will actually weaken your abdominals that support your back, in turn leading to a weaker lower back.

How is this the case?

When you push against a muscles it reacts by contracting back;”> against the force. When you wear a weight belt rather then assisting you to hold in your abdominals in which is the action to support your lower back, it causes your to contact against the belt, pushing your abdominals out. For these muscles to support your lower back they need to be activated.

Yes will feel stronger wearing a weight belt, but only while you are wearing the belt. Unfortunately you do not wear this support in everyday life, so when you are lifting up the kids or carrying a heavy box you are more susceptible to injuring your back because the weight belt has trained you not to use your abdominals when lifting heavy weights.

By not wearing a weight belt you may need to drop the weights you are lifting, but you will train your abdominals to support your back correctly, over time strengthen both your abdominals and your lower back making you stronger in all facets of life not just in the gym.
